Yes, the job market is tight. We have record unemployment. And the economy is not showing any signs of job creation. So how do you find a job in this economy?

First, you have to understand that even though the market is tight, there are jobs available. There are always jobs available. The difference today, in this tight job market is that there are more people vying for fewer positions. So how you market, brand and differentiate yourself becomes more important.

When marketing yourself to potential employers my belief is to cast a wide net. Specialty and general recruiters are a great place to start. Often recruiters hear about positions that aren't advertised to the general public. Contact as many reputable recruiters as you can find that fill positions in your area of expertise or the areas you are interested in looking for work.

Posting your resume on Job boards is another avenue that you should consider. Companies that don't have the budget to hire a professional recruiting agency often utilize job boards.

Lastly you should contact companies that would hire people with your background or expertise. A resume blasting service can be a great tool to help get your resume out and showcase your experience. Creating your brand, or self-packaging, is an ongoing process that will help you differentiate yourself when you get in front of a prospective employer. The good news is this gives you an opportunity to stand out and differentiate yourself from the competition.
